The following are a few basic guidelines on how to generally plant any millet. Keep in mind that every millet has its own requirements.
So you can use these guidelines and tweak them to plant millets, you must invest time in preparing the soil before moving on to any other step –
- Choose land that has more exposure to sunlight.
- Check if the soil’s moisture content.
- Add Nitrogen-rich fertilizer to enrich the soil.
- Select which method of planting you want to use for your soil.
- Ensure seed distance properly using either instruments or eyeballing if you have done.
- Seeds should be planted at least 1 inch inside the ground.
- Rows should be at least 12 inches apart.
- After planting, add a bit of water to moisten
- Add compost around the seed.
- Add a moisture-retaining substance like mulch to hold onto the moisture.
- When you observe the grasses and seeds have turned golden, harvest your crops for usage.
How Long Does It Take for Millets to Grow?
Roughly, on average, it takes about 70-90 days to mature. Post-harvest, the seed is usually ready 70 to 90 days after planting. Depending on which millet, it may take a few days more or less than 90 days.
Can Ducklings Eat Millet?
As ducklings are still babies, their digestive system is not as strong as adults. Thus they do have restrictions on their eating patterns.
It’s safe to feed them with bird seeds, oats, rice, etc. It may not be a great idea to feed them millet quite yet.
What Is the Best Grain for Ducks?
Wheat is the best grain for ducks since it is approximately 11% protein. It is an all-rounder grain for ducks and inexpensive too. Barley, alternatively, can also be fed. Just remember whatever you feed should have a fairly high protein content for the ducks to grow their muscles adequately.

However, millet can’t be fed to ducklings since their digestive system is not up to the level to be able to digest it. Millets should ideally be planted from June to August, but for some countries, April to May is the right choice for maturation.

Keep in mind that it takes roughly around 80 days on average for the plants to mature. There’s no need to water the soil after planting since a rain shower itself is sufficient for these crops.
